Beating Burnout

When burnout hits, it’s like your whole give-a-damn engine grinds to a halt. You feel empty and mentally exhausted. Work (and life) becomes a bleak chore, at best.

That burnout might be the result of your job, or the demands on you from your role as a parent or caregiver (or both). Whatever the source, burnout is no joke.

This six-week starter package is designed to help you:

  • Learn and apply “first-aid” practices and techniques to improve the present moment.
  • Understand the source of your burnout.
  • Use that understanding to explore and apply counter-burnout changes.
  • Experiment with ongoing practices and tools that can help you keep burnout at bay.
  • Discover what fuels and nourishes you so you can plug in more often, more intentionally.

Your life as a learning lab

The work we’ll do together starts with a basic framework and some tools for coping with burnout, but from there it’s all about applying them in the real world.

There is no prescriptive approach in this work. Within a framework that offers a basic structure, we tailor it specifically for you as we go. Each week, the discussion in our sessions has its roots in what you’re experiencing in your life. And each week between sessions, you will take the ideas and insights from those sessions and experiment with them in your day-to-day life.

It’s a cycle of learning, applying what you learn, unpacking the experience, and applying the learning from that, all focused on discovering what works best for you.

During these sessions, we’ll explore:

First-Aid Tools

One of the first things we’ll do is start creating your own personalized “first-aid kit” you can use to both improve current feeling of burnout and apply in the future if you feel burnout cropping up again. The contents of that first-aid kit are tools and practices you can use to help you a) dial down the stress response that can grind you down and feed that burnout and b) give you a shot of energy.

Over the course of the six sessions and the time between them, you will experiment with different first-aid tools to get a better understanding of what feels most effective for you (there is no “one size fits all” with this).

Burnout Assessment

Our next step will be an in-depth conversation about what’s behind that burnout, how it’s affecting you, and how you currently deal with it (or don’t). This will provide the starting point for our exploration, and highlight potential areas of engagement as you use your real life as a learning laboratory for how to more effectively navigate change.

Counter-burnout measures

Once you have a deeper awareness of what is behind the burnout, we’ll start exploring counter-burnout changes you can make. Those changes can include:

  • External changes you can make to reduce the source of the burnout.
  • Internal changes in how you to relate to the circumstances and events in your life.
  • New practices and habits that can help you better navigate challenges and stress.
